● 趣味＆特技
- My main intellectual interests lie in the field of language. As a child, I grew up in Singapore (which was still, at the time, a British colony) and I was surrounded by languages such as Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil. Even when I was small, I was fascinated by these different means of communication (even though I only ever learned a few words of each). My interest grew even stronger when I later went to a junior high school in the Netherlands (where I was in a German-speaking class, though my friends outside school spoke Dutch), and finally on to an international senior high school in Italy (where I spent half the day speaking English and the other half speaking Italian). Since then, I have enjoyed dabbling in many other languages − there are still more than 6000 to choose from!
私は主として言葉に知的関心を抱いています。子供の頃、当時はまだ英国の植民地だったシンガポールで育った私は、マレー語、北京語、タミル語などの言葉に囲まれて育ちました。幼い子供ではありましたが、いろいろな意思疎通の手段があるのに感心したものです。とはいえ、各言語について覚えた単語は２、３語くらいでしたが。オランダの高校に進学してからも、言葉に対する興味はますます強くなりました。私はドイツ語使用者のクラスに在籍していたのですが、学校以外の友人はオランダ語を話していました。イタリアのインターナショナル・ハイスクールに転校してからは、半日は英語で残り半日はイタリア語というような生活でした。以来、他にもいろいろな言語に手を出しています。なにしろ選択肢は６千以上ありますからね！
- Beyond academic life, I am very keen on classical music. I have been playing the piano since childhood and love to attend classical concerts. I just wish I had practiced more as a child! I also enjoy sports, by the way − in particular, tennis and skiing (though I need more practice in both of those, too!).
学問の世界以外では、クラシック音楽に親しんでいます。子供の頃からピアノをたしなんでいますし、演奏会に出かけるのも大好きです。子供の頃もっとピアノを練習しておけば良かったなと思っています。その他、スポーツもします。とくにテニスとスキーが好きですが、これももっと練習しなければ！
